Pretty permalinks

The only option of permalinks that works is if it is set to Plain. If I choose other options to make the url pretty it does not work. I have tried editing the htaccess file, contacting bluehost and they say it is a wordpress issue. How can I fix this? Thank you for the help.

Thank you, I have been trying to contact bluehost to get this fixed. I have looked at all the documents with regards to htaccess and mod_rewrite and other options. Nothing works at this point.
