Primary domain vs. Custom domain

When I add my new custom domain, can I delete my primary domain which was created using the free plan? If so, what will happen to my website content? Will I lose it and have to start from the beginning or it will remain? My intention is to replace my free domain with a mapped custom domain without losing the website content.

  • Hi there,

“Primary domain” refers to the domain you set as the main domain on your site.

foodconstructioncom.wordpress.com is only the primary domain right now because it’s the only domain on your site. The moment you add a custom domain, that domain will be set as the primary instead of the free address.

You cannot get rid of the free address. That is your site. So if you delete the free address, you delete your site. But if you add a custom domain, that free address is hidden, and people visiting your site won’t see it. Just like putting a new cover on an old book. The book looks different, but nothing on the inside actually changes.
