Private blog – Can only accept invite on one device

  • Unknown's avatar

I have a private blog and have invited viewers. If they accept on their desktop, they cannot see it on their phone and vice versa. How do I fix this?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi knightcatsdefense,

It might be better if the viewers who are having trouble accepting the invite contact us through their accounts — that way we can troubleshoot exactly what they are seeing. You can send them here to contact us and we’ll be happy to take a look:

    Thanks!

They don’t have accounts to be able to contact you. That’s the problem. They log in, and then they’re told they don’t have access, even though they’ve been given an invite. The problem seems to be specific to gmail accounts. How do we proceed with keeping it a private site? Is there a way to open it but have them input a password? Please help! Thank you!

  • Hi there,

The logs for your site show you invited several people as Followers, rather than inviting them as Viewers. Inviting them as a follower will not allow them to access a private site, and would explain why the links are not working.

They don’t have accounts to be able to contact you.

In order to accept an invitation to become a viewer on a private WordPress.com site you need to create a WordPress.com account. When they click the link in the invitation email to accept the invitation, they will be prompted to create an account, and they won’t be able to view your site unless they complete that process.

    We explain this here:

I see you’ve since set your site to hidden from search engines instead. If you decide to set this site to private again, you’ll need to re-invite everyone you invited as followers in the Viewer role, and then they will need to create accounts before they can accept the invitation.

Is there a way to open it but have them input a password?

You can password-protect individual posts and pages on a WordPress.com site. But then the password is set on the post or page itself, meaning anyone who knows it can view that content, so it’s less secure than a private site where access is protected both by it being invitation-only and by the password of the individual WordPress.com account of each viewer.
