Private blog: do all viewers/followers/subscribers need to create a WordPress account to view?
-
Hi!
I would like to create a private blog to share only with close family so I would like it password-protected so I can control who to give access to by inviting them.
In the help I read that such users would need to have a WordPress account – I wonder if this is true of all kinds of people? Viewers/followers/subscribers?
I don’t think it is very practical to limit your viewers to people who have an account already (or are willing or capable of creating one), as most people don’t.
I particular I am taking about parents and grand-parents who couldn’t care less about having one and would think it is actually a hurdle!
So is there a way to invite people to view contents without that?
Note: i don’t want a ‘hidden’ blog, because the pictures and stories there will be personal.
Thank you! -
If you make your site private via https://wordpress.com/support/settings/privacy-settings/ they will need to have a WordPress.com account that you can then invite to the site.
This is generally the preferred method for private family sites, as it’s the least friction. One registration, one login, and you can view the whole site.
Alternatively, you can keep the site public, but password-protect every post and page following the steps at https://wordpress.com/support/post-and-page-visibility/
They won’t need to register an account, but they will need to remember the password and enter it for every post and page they want to view.

Hi and thanks for your answer!
So I understand that for a private blog, each and every visitor needs to create their own account and there’s no way around it.
I guess I could create one “dummy” account and share credentials with all the family, but that doesn’t seem right.
Thank you!

Yes, that is correct:

Hi, it’s me again. So, I started implementing this. I haven’t published my blog yet, but I have set it to private.
My question is, when I create a new article, I have the choice to publish is in public or in private and to set a password – is that an additional password or the same one as for the general private site access?
Do I need to set a password for each blog if I have already set the whole website to private?
Many thanks!

Hi there, it’s enough to set your entire website to Private and invite specific viewers to have access. You don’t need to additionally password protect your blog posts individually.
