Private to Public Setting
-
This is very frustrating. I’ve changed my site from Private to Public so that I can easily share my blog with friends without having them create a WordPress.com account just to access my content. I had tried to create the site that required a password to view, but that option also requires that the viewer create a WordPress.com account which I don’t want my casual visitors to have to do. Any way around this? Also, I changed all of my pages to ‘Public’ but it’s still showing the site as ‘Private’. What am I doing wrong here?

Hi rackley94901,
I can only imagine how you feel.
While there’s no direct way of bypassing the process of having casual visitors own an account on your site, they actually don’t have to create the account by themselves. There’s a very simple process to invite them as readers to access your content. You can check it out on the link below:

You might also want to take a look at the link below to better understand privacy settings on your account:

Hope this helps!

If your site is set to private, we take that privacy pretty seriously, so we ask anyone you invite to create an account with us so that we can be absolutely sure that only the people you give access to can see the site.
I understand this is more than you may need, but it is done to be sure that the login access of folks you invite is protected within our system, so there is less chance of someone seeing your site who is not supposed to.
There is not a “lighter” version of site privacy, so that is the only way to invite access to your private site, but one thing you can consider is to make your site public, but add password protection to all pages and blog posts: https://wordpress.com/support/post-and-page-visibility/
This would be a bit more work for you as you would need to remember to set password protection for each page, but you can use the same password multiple times, and then share the password with anyone you want to give access to, perhaps by messaging it to them directly.
This would allow anyone with the password to access content on the site, and they would not need to have a WordPress.com login to do so, just a simple password you share with them.
Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.

OOps, I forgot to add that your site does appear to be private to me still. You can set it to “public” here: https://wordpress.com/settings/general/
From there pick the site you want to make public an then scroll down on the page to look for this option:
Be sure to set your site to Public as shown and also discourage search engines by checking the box below. No need for them to be coming to your site ;)
Hope this helps!
