Problems importing audio; should I empty & reimport?
-
My audio files didn’t import when importing from WordPress.org site. I was hoping if I empty the blog & try re-importing now that I’ve purchased a space upgrade, it would work.
I really couldn’t find any useful information on importing, requirements for importing media files, or addressing problems. Can you at least point to some detailed, useful documentation?
Thank

That was exactly the problem. :)
We can’t import audio files without a space upgrade.
I have emptied the blog as requested, so please feel free to try the import again and let us know how it goes!

The second import didn’t work, even with the upgrade. Any other suggestions or documentation to go by?
-
Sorry, should have been more clear.
The second import worked for content & the rest, but not any of the attached podcast files. Other suggestions?
-
Just to be sure, what is the URL of the blog you’re trying to import to, as it should have worked? Was it the one I emptied (I hope)?
-
Yes, that was the correct one to empty.
I was going to look at the xml, to make sure it contained the file references. Is there any documentation on what the importer expects, with regard to structure?
-
Do a search in the XML file for one of the audio file names. Above it, you should see a post ID referenced for the attachment. If you have that, it’s good to go.
I have emptied the blog again.

Alas, it seems to be formatted differently. The attachements were attached with the podPress plugin and the export seems to be specific to the plugin, using a tag like this:
<item>
...
<wp:postmeta>
<wp:meta_key>_podPressMedia</wp:meta_key>
<wp:meta_value><!--[CDATA[a:1:{i:0;a:10:{s:3:"URI";s:65:"http://www.healthbusinessblog.com/wp-content/uploads/fasanokp.mp3";s:5:"title";s:48:"David Williams interviews Ka
</wp:postmeta-->
</wp:meta_value></wp:postmeta></item>
There are nearly 200 podcasts to import. Is there any way to automate importing from a site that uses the podPress plugin?
Alternatively, can you provide an example of the xml for an item that has an attachement that would be imported properly into WordPress.com?
Thanks

Ah, that’s the problem.
What WordPress means by “attached” is that the media was uploaded via the Add Media button while writing or editing the specific post or page. These are the attachments that we look for during our import.
We don’t have a way to accomodate for special plugin attachment schemes, but I imagine someone may have run into this before. I recommend checking with the folks at http://wordpress.org/support/ as there might be another plugin which could help with this.
Alternatively, I can see what we can do about bringing over the media files, but they will no longer be attached to any particular post. Please let me know if you’d like us to do that.

There’s actually nothing useful on that site, that I’ve been able to find, because all solutions assume I have access to install additional or differing plugins. I assume there is no way to do that?
So if paid for import assistance, would there be anyway to successfully import those podcasts? Or am I stuck to figure out a solution on my own?
-
No, we don’t really have an option on our end.
What I means was that maybe there is a solution for your self-hosted blog before you generate the export.

-
Sure, is http://healthbizwhiz.wordpress.com/ the blog you want me to empty, or was it another?

I have emptied the blog as requested.
Please feel free to try again and let us know how it goes!

Well, since you don’t offer any automated solution to import all of my attachments, I’ve been working on a script to reorganize the export file.
Since there’s no documentation or support answers that I could find on what exactly the importer is looking for in order to import the attachments, it’s been a trial & error process. Which takes a number of iterations. And I need support’s help to empty each time, don’t I?
So to answer your question, the audio files didn’t import so I need to keep working through the possible solutions. Again, any leads on an import log would be very helpful.
Thanks

Didn’t realize you were waiting for a response before emptying or I would have responded sooner.
I assume there’s no reason why you wouldn’t empty the blog, since it appears to require support’s intervention, right? I mean, if I want my blog emptied, there shouldn’t be any reason to delay my request, right?
I appreciate your help, but this process is slow enough. Unless I’m asking for something that is restricted for some reason, I would appreciate it if you quickly handle my request, while waiting to have your curiosity satisfied.
Please empty the blog. Thank you.

No reason to delay, no, and I have emptied it for you now.
What I’d like to do is find out what’s going on so we can actually fix this for you, which we have the power to do, without all of this trial and error.
Can you give me a direct link to one of the posts on Posterous with attached audio?
