Sharing with people you know and on social media are the best ways. The other most effective way is to find blogs by other bloggers and connect with them there. Hopefully they visit your site in return.
And then make sure you make effective use of tags so your posts can easily be found by topic in the WordPress.com Reader, and make sure you publish high quality original content that search engines will show to people who search online for the topics you write about.
Growing a following takes time, though, so don’t be discouraged if nothing you do seems to have an effect at first.
