I have made my site public per a friend’s instructions; however, when I do a google search on my name, my blog never shows as an option. All I have to do is type my friend’s name and his blog is one of the first things to pop up. Mine only shows one blog post, and readers would have to completely understand how to work through wordpress to see my blog. How can I ensure my blog posts are completely public for any search engine to find?

When did you set the site to public, and what site are you speaking of? I see no recent changes to privacy settings on http://amychrestman03.wordpress.com/
It takes several weeks after a site is created or set to public for search engines to index it, and it will only start showing in search results once the initial indexing completes. Search engines also remove sites from their index if they are inactive for too long, but once you start regularly publishing new content it should be re-indexed again.
