Publishing Failed, you are probably offline

Complete beginner/novice, first few hours on WordPress. It is not allowing me to save, update or publish anything. The message is ‘Publishing failed, you are probably offline.’ I am not offline because I returned to the home page and it is showing that I am, indeed, logged in.
