Question about mapping a domain

    Hi all,
    Kind of a newbie. I have purchased a domain name through GoDaddy, and want to use with my WordPress site. One of my business partners already has a server that I can use for hosting, for free. Is there a way to map my owned domain to my website without upgrading to premium? (I already have it redirecting, but the address still comes up as mysite.wordpress.com after it’s loaded.) Or do I need to be a premium member to do this? Probably a very basic question but I’m new to the nuts and bolts of this stuff.

    Hi there!

    If you would like to use it here on WordPress.com all you need to do is “map” your existing domain to your site. You will need an upgraded WordPress.com plan on your site in order to map a domain. To add domain mapping , follow the next steps:

    1- Go to the Domains page, select your site, and choose the Add Domain option.
    2- Click the Upgrade button next to “Already own a domain?”
    3-Enter the domain you’d like to map and click the blue Add button
    4-Complete the checkout process for the domain mapping and WordPress.com plan (if you didn’t have a plan already).

    Hi Steve,

    If you want to host a site on your business partner’s free hosting, you will need to create a self hosted WordPress.org site. WordPress.com sites can only be hosted on our servers. There is more information about the differences between the two in this guide:

    A domain can be mapped using any of our paid plans, including the Personal plan. First choose a plan from this page:

    https://wordpress.com/plans/

    Then choose the domain you would like to use.

    A redirect will only direct traffic from one site to another. If you want visitors to see a custom domain on your site, you will need to use Domain Mapping:

    https://en.support.wordpress.com/map-existing-domain/
