Question regarding themes

  We are going to be building our site on WordPress. However, I am trying to figure out a few things…primarily, we had found a theme we like, but I don’t think it is one of the ones on the theme list from WordPress.com.   If we wanted to use this, is that something we have to have hosted? Or can I use it on the hosted version of WordPress and use it the same way I would if I chose a theme on WordPress site? If we cannot use it, perhaps it would help to tell you the main reason we want that theme…we are an adoption agency, and even though the subject of the sample theme is totally not a good comparison for us, we like the way the animals are “photolisted” on the first page under shortcode. If you know of a theme on WordPress that has a similar feature, we are open to suggestions.

  I want to be able to design and customize the site on the web as WordPress is designed for, not through a program if at all possible. After we design it, we will need assistance in pointing our domain when we purchase the upgrade package.

  Here at WordPress.com we have our choice of over 200 themes which you can find in your Dashboard under Appearance>Themes or in the Theme Showcase. http://wordpress.com/themes/ We cannot use/upload external themes.

  There are several themes that have grid based front pages. The best would be to look at the Theme Showcase, under the photography or portfolio tags.

  There would also be a way to set up a site to display a photo with text next to it like the “shortcode” page you mentioned. Look for themes that support a Featured Image or the Gallery Post Format.
