Question with upgrading

If I upgrade to get my own domain and mapping from wordpress.org, can I customize a new theme? Or do I have to get a webserver to be able to do that?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Uh, no, that’s not how it works. WordPress.org does not sell upgrades. WordPress.com does. None of them, however, not even the CSS upgrade, will allow you to install an external theme.

If you want to use an external theme, you need to go to WordPress.org, download the WordPress software, buy some hosted space somewhere online from a different host, upload the software there, and then upload and apply the theme.

Ok. So if I buy the upgrade domain and mapping from wordpress.com it just reverts my blog.wordpress.com to blog.com? All the same and normal free features still exist?

Yes, exactly. You can’t put ads on it, can’t post flash or javascript, etc. It’s all the same but you have a unique domain name. For many reasons, this is a GOOD idea. I was the first person to get my own domain name here and while it took me several months to get why it was a good thing, virtually all my blogs now have them.
