  Completely start over. When I change a theme, prior content goes with it. I’m having a lot of trouble customizing any theme I choose.

  Yes. It’s supposed to. You may either create another website/blog, or empty the present site of content. See the Empty Site support page for instructions regarding the latter choice.

  There is a theme guide for every WordPress.com theme. Here are some examples:

  Just replace the theme name extension at the end of the URL with the name of the theme you are using, or might like to use, to see the corresponding theme guide. Multiple word names should be hyphenated.
