Recover Username

  • Unknown's avatar

I am the owner of a username that I have been using across social media platforms for well over ten years. At one point I owned the domain name and somewhere along the line it eventually resulted in going back to free hosting across several other platforms. That being said, it’s still tied into WordPress and now that I want to utilize it again WP is giving me the message that the username belongs to someone else. Is there a way that I can verify this username belongs to me so that I can access it again and apply it to setting up a fresh new blog site? If it is any consolation, I also still utilize the name under Blogger, but prefer to reinvent my blog via WP and eventually re-purchase the domain name. Matter of fact, I once owned it and had it rerouted through WP if this also helps to authenticate the information being presented here.

  • Hi there,

    What is the username?

If it was a username you yourself never registered on WordPress.com, then it is the property of the user who did register the account, even if you own that username on other platforms.

We do not reuse or reassign blog names on WordPress.com. Please refer to this support page for more information:

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/recycling-blog-names/

If you like, you can attempt to contact the owner of that blog and ask them if they would like to transfer it to you. You can do this by either leaving them a message using a contact form, if one exists on their site, or by leaving a comment on an existing page or post requesting they contact you.

If you are able to reach the blog owner and they are willing to transfer the blog to you, here are the instructions they can use to do that:

    http://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/#transferring-your-blog-to-another-user-or-account

If they do not respond or refuse the transfer, you will need to select a different name for your WordPress.com blog.

Keep in mind, we also offer an upgrade for custom domain names and you can use any WordPress.com blog URL underneath a custom domain. For more details about how domain mapping works, see this guide:

    Thanks,

I was the originator of the name “Proactiff” years ago so it was in fact registered using one of my many (email addresses of the same name, to include a defunct hotmail of the same name). Perhaps I had deleted my blog so the name may have gone into obscurity and now it comes up as already in use. However, I can assure that I have once housed a WP blog using the name “Proactiff” and would love to be able to access the name again. I have tried other routes since contacting this forum to recover any (!) record of having had access to the name. I have once paid via WordPress as well as used GoDaddy services; I even had it reroutes front Blogger at one time. All to no avail. My PayPal says that if I can find any of my old card numbers perhaps they can find it, but my activity spans 10 years old so it’s slim. GoDaddy can’t locate anything prior because someone purchased my domain name in May of 2017. But this has nothing to do with me wanting to turn my WP blog name into MY social media platform name (Proactiff) into a WP username again. Does this help locate any information to make this possible?

  • Hi there,

Perhaps I had deleted my blog so the name may have gone into obscurity and now it comes up as already in use.

We don’t recycle usernames, so it wouldn’t be possible for another user to inherit your username unless you transferred it to them. I checked the history of the username and the current user is the original owner.

You may have been using Proactiff for your self-hosted WordPress.org site, but it has had only one owner on WordPress.com.
