Released Domain

I released a domain that I purchased while it was transferring to a new site. Any way to get it back? Or, if not, anyone know how long before it’s available to purchase again?

  • Hi there,

What do you mean “released”? There is no way to release a domain.

Are you speaking of leahgoes.com? You cancelled that domain, meaning it no longer exists and you no longer own it. If any domain transfer was in progress at the time you cancelled it, that transfer was stopped as you cannot transfer a domain you no longer own.

It will be several weeks before that domain is released again, as it will first go through a redemption process at our registrar, similar to what happens to an expired domain. It’s also not guaranteed you’ll be able to register it again once it’s released, as someone else might be able to buy it before you can.

At this point I should still be able to get the domain back for you without you having to pay a redemption fee, but we only have a few days to do this. Please confirm if I should try to recover the domain from our registrar.

Once it’s restore you should be able to transfer it again, but there might be a transfer lock applied by our registrar in which case you’ll possibly need to wait 60 days before you’ll be able to transfer. We’ll only know that once the domain is recovered.

Thank you for the detailed and prompt response. I really appreciate your help as I’m wading through this.

I didn’t mean to cancel the domain, and I definitely still want it. It was one of those “everyone’s using the wifi and it’s late and my page is frozen and I keep hitting the button and nothing’s happening and now it’s gone” scenarios, so if it’s possible to get the domain back I would love to do that. Thank you for your help!

Actually – follow up question. I think the bigger issue is that I don’t want to host leahgoes.com on wordpress any longer. So since I purchased that through wordpress I think that it’ll have to stay cancelled/released back into the domains. Or else I’m paying for two services – wordpress premium that I’m not using and the hosting on my new site, right?

Haha. Happens to the best of us!

Waiting for the domain to be released puts you at a very real risk of losing it, so I wouldn’t recommend that.

As I said above, once the domain is restored you’ll be able to transfer it to the hosting provider you want to use, so it won’t be registered with us any more and you won’t pay us for future renewals, but you’ll also not lose ownership of the domain. Even if it’s transfer locked after it’s restored, you’ll still be able to point it to a different provider until you can transfer it. We do not limit you in where you can use a domain purchased from us.

I can restore the domain to your account without having to restore the Premium Plan, for which you’ve already been refunded.

But it’s up to you. Please let me know what you want to do.

How long does it take to be released? All searches I’ve done of it of late show it still taken and that I am still the owner, which is great and all but I don’t really want to wait on it to be restored and transferred if it’ll be faster to just let it release and then purchase it again. I understand the potential risks here but I want the site back up.

  • How long the domain takes to be released depends on our domain registrar, but at minimum it will take a few weeks, during which the domain will go through redemption and the registrar can attempt to sell it at a private auction, in which case you’ll lose it.

It’s also possible the domain won’t be released until after it expires at the end of May next year.

Restoring the domain, on the other hand, shouldn’t take longer than about 48 hours, and then it takes on average about a week to transfer a domain to a different provider, though you can map it to a different provider the moment it’s restored.

Also note that as it’s already been more than 5 days since you cancelled the domain it can go into redemption with our registrar at any moment. If we contact them to restore it and they reply that it’s already in redemption, there will be an additional $80 fee to get it back. The longer you wait, the more likely that is to happen.

Ok, then let me do that. Could we try to get it back, and if it incurs a fee that’s fine. Let’s just get this over with.

  • I’ve emailed our registrar. At this point it doesn’t look like it’s in redemption yet, so there shouldn’t be additional fees, but I’ll let you know once they reply.

  • Okay, our registrar has restored your domain and it’s back on your account.

If you want to transfer it to another provider, please follow the steps here:
