Remove a mapped domain

  • Unknown's avatar

I need to have my mapped domain (keyonhejazi.com) removed from mapping. Can someone on the support team please help me do this? I have accidentally mapped this without first owning the domain and now I don’t see any options to unmap it. I’d like to do so in order to first purchase the domain afterwards.

    Can mods help with this?

    Hi there!

It looks like you have already removed the domain connection (mapping), as keyonhejazi.com is no longer mapped to any of your WordPress.com sites.

Looking at the domain’s records, I see that it’s currently in a stage called pendingDelete, which means it’ll be available for registration as a new domain. While we can’t notify you when it becomes available, I suggest checking a few times daily to see if you can register it by following this guide.

I also recommend upgrading to a yearly WordPress.com plan so that you get a free domain credit for the first year. You can use that free domain credit to register keyonhejazi.com again when it’s available.

Feel free to upgrade using the button below:

Thanks for your response. I’m not seeing any indication on WordPress or via email that this is in the process of being deleted. It has been months at this point. Can you not just remove it manually? I’ve seen several posts in which that was what the mods did.

    Hi there!

The domain’s original expiry date was September 22, 2024, so it would have still been active on your WordPress.com site. From your account logs, I see that you manually canceled the domain on July 21, 2024. Can you help me understand why you canceled the domain?

I wanted to clarify that it’s not just a domain connection (Or mapping). This domain was registered with us. Domain registrations are a little more complicated than other subscriptions. We are unable to restore or altogether remove a domain. As explained in our support document about canceling domains:

Getting a domain back after it has been canceled can be difficult, more expensive, and sometimes impossible. Once you cancel your domain, there is usually a small window of time to restore it.

Just like with domain expirations, domain cancellations also cause the domain to go through several stages. We can restore the domain in most of those stages, but once it enters the pendingDelete stage, it’s in the process of being deleted from the registry. This stage doesn’t last months (it’s been a little over a month since you canceled the domain, and the domain was in other stages before it entered the pendingDelete stage).

We can’t restore a domain anymore when it enters this stage. We can’t entirely cancel it at any point in time so that it becomes available for registration elsewhere (we can only cancel the subscription from our side). The several posts you mentioned seeing might have been just domain mapping/connection and not registration.

So, we strongly advise against canceling a domain or letting it expire if you plan to use it again, even if with another host. Had you contacted us earlier, we could have restored it directly without you having to wait for it to be fully removed from the registry.

At this point, you’ll need to wait until the domain is fully removed and available for registration again. It’s not possible for us to notify you when that happens, and the domain will be available for everyone to register. That’s why I suggested earlier to keep checking several times every day to register it as soon as it’s available again.
