removing a phishing "Like" from a page

    Just got a like on my home page from a porn phishing site. How can I remove that like without having to close down everyone’s ability to Like.

    Unfortunately, I didn’t translate the Gravatar name before I clicked on it and was sent to the site, which I immediately shut. Who knows what’s on my website or computer now.

    Hi there,

    There’s no way to remove individual likes from the page, but if you look up the person’s Gravatar profile at https://en.gravatar.com/ you can report them there and our terms of service team will review the account.

    Or if you can give me a link to the post that received the like and the username appearing for the like in your notifications and I can follow up on it for you.

    Note that this is not phishing. “Phishing” is a very specific term in online security referring to a malicious site that makes itself appear like a site you use regularly, like your bank’s internet banking portal or your email service, in order to trick you into giving them your password or other sensitive information.

    I turned off Likes for all pages and posts yesterday but just turned them back on so you can see and access, if need be. Will this Gravitar disappear from my page once you all have inspected and, I hope, removed it from that system? Or do I have to shut off visible Likes for the site to keep things like this from getting through? I’d hate for anyone to click on it and allow access to their information (I assume). If it won’t disappear or become harmless, I’d like to know when you’ve gotten what you want there so I can shut Likes down again.

    I thought about backing up my site, but worry my clicking on the Gravitar, which took me to a website, may have installed something that would carry on into the backup. Any way to tell if my site has been compromised?

    Hi katypye, thanks for that. We aren’t seeing much on our end when we click on the gravatar. Just a blank picture and empty profile, which definitely shouldn’t have felt risky.

    Could you clarify what you clicked?

    I went back to my history and e-mail. I got an e-mail from WordPress.com saying a page had been Liked by (name). It gave me a link to which of my pages. Under that text it reads the standard: “You should go see what they’re up to. Maybe you’ll like their blog as much as they liked yours!” I believe that’s where I clicked on the Gravitar. I never did read further down, or I would have seen what sort of site it was. Grrr.

    Ahhh, got it. So you got an emailed link to their blog after they liked your post.

    I can confirm that site doesn’t have any viruses on it, so you should be safe there, and their Gravatar url doesn’t link to the site. So your visitors should be okay too.

    You can disregard the email. I’ll remove the link to their site from this thread, too (we’ll make note of it on our sid so staff knows what you’re referring to.).

    Whew! Thank you! Good to know. I’ll consider this experience a warning shot across the bow to pay very close attention to future “Look who Liked you!” e-mails. Might not be so lucky next time.
