removing option for comment

i have followed the instructions for removing the comment box (uncheck the relevant boxes, then save), but this does not remove the comment box. Any suggestions welcome…

If you uncheck both of the “Before a Comment Appears” options at Settings > Discussion and save changes, then no new comments will appear. Perhaps this is what you’ve already done.
Comment settings on posts and pages published previously will remain the same regardless of the settings on the Discussion Settings page. If you’d previously allowed comments universally, then comments must be disabled individually on each post and page published before you changed the setting to disallow them on new posts. Disable comments on individual posts and pages by using the Quick Edit tool at All Posts and All Page, respectively. Uncheck “Allow Comments” for each post and page individually.
