Removing wordpress.com from the domain name by switching from free to paid plan?

  Hi, I wanted to know whether it was possible to create a wordpress-hosted website under the free plan (let’s say http://www.example.wordpress.com), and then switch to a paid plan and change the domain name to http://www.example.com (assuming it would be free naturally).

  The rationale is that I would like to experiment with design and see whether this is really what I would need, and then transition to a paid plan once I am comfortable and start sharing the URL. I saw in the page below that it should be possible (through a redirect), but I would like to understand how this would work, and whether it would fit my needs.

  Yes, you can start building your site on the free .wordpress.com domain and you can even set it to private so that no one but you and people you invite can see it.

  When you’re ready, you can register, transfer, or map a domain and start sharing it with people.
