replacing existing website but not changing DNS

  Hi. I want to create a new e-commerce website for my existing business (rather than pay someone else a fortune to use wordpress anyway) but do not want to make any changes to the DNS while i do this. Would it be better to buy a cheap domain name for now and change it when i have finished?
