Request for payment for domain from another organization

  I received an e-mail titled “Domain Alert: MARGARET YOUNG This is your Final Reminder of Domain – HEARTOFAFRICAFILM.COM” claiming to be from “Internet Services” (also providing a phone number located in East Hampton, NY) and saying “it’s time to send in your registration and save. Failure to complete your Domain name search engine registration by the expiration date may result in cancellation of this proposal making it difficult for your customers to locate you on the web.”

  Clearly, this is not a payment required for domain registration with WordPress–we have that set up to renew automatically. It appears to be an invitation to register the domain name with a search engine (not specified) to make the domain more easily searchable (?). Though the invitation is apparently legitimate, I think it is designed to fool people into thinking they need to pay to maintain the registration of their domain name.

  I’m posting this to make sure I’m understanding all of this correctly and also to caution anyone else who is getting a similar invitation.

  Hi bccmby,

  I’ve checked your account and the domain isn’t due for renewal until 2018 — we’ll send you a notification email before charging your card. The email sounds like spam and there is no need to respond as the renewal is handled by us :)
