Reset WordPress
-
I have decide to change my niche. So, I want to have it reset & start over.
The site I need help with is thatvishalsingh.wordpress.com.
-
Since this cannot be undone, please reply with the URL of the site you want to empty as confirmation.
-
Thank you for your response. Here’s the URL:
thatvishalsingh.wordpress.com
I’ve some questions before you proceed with the reset.
1. When starting with WordPress, we’re asked to choose our desirable name for the website. Then, we’re guided through the first time setup, like choosing the theme, etc. Is it going to be the same again? I want it to be a fresh setup, if it’s possible.
2. Normally, the homepage isn’t displayed with it’s name ‘Home’ on the top. But, after somedays I noticed it popping up. It’s unusual & I can’t find a reason behind it.
-
1. No, this would just remove all of the content. We don’t have a way to get it back to the initial setup stage, but you can start a new site that way at any time from https://wordpress.com/start
2. That does sound odd. If you can point me to where you see that, I can figure out what’s going on.

As of now, my site doesn’t have any pages.
https://drive.google.com/file/d/12KdTwCut6H8sJonEaK1G970py6nr9QFU/view?usp=sharing
It still shows this as it’s homepage:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/12rhjjFB9fqJW3LtSusoN56Vvkw2RW5y9/view?usp=sharing
The customize menu shows that it doesn’t have any homepage settings. It means it’s showing some default homepage.

Then I create an untitled page and save it as draft.

I’ve a question for you here. Every page has an URL slug & it increments with every page created. It changes to the title if we define a title for the page. Can you explain how this works? Is it possible to reset this slug counter?
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1izKPacSkKtYl_I06_LcZAeg2vdzNBHTk/view?usp=sharing
Then I add the title to this page as ‘Home’ & publish it.
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1sUmmbJH8WaG0RzflfW6clEtLC-jDShwv/view?usp=sharing
I also make it the homepage by making the required changes in the customizer menu.
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1D9pp2aKof9WKFRWBMYlnGFR4GoIU9k3O/view?usp=sharing
On visiting my website now, it shows the homepage as:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1MP28otZzpSCekk61CuMQ-2YkOjQBdqtv/view?usp=sharing
… with ‘Home’ as title on it’s homepage.
Some backstory here, I created another site (URL: sudovishal.wordpress.com) using this site. The second site doesn’t behave in such a way because it was built from start to finish using the structure and pages from this one. As you can see, it doesn’t show ‘Home’ on it’s homepage. Also, the URL slug counter for the homepage of the second site is in single-digits whereas it’s in triple-digits for the homepage of the first one. The slug counter bugs me.

I’m confused af. Please help me with this.

Hi there,
The customize menu shows that it doesn’t have any homepage settings. It means it’s showing some default homepage.
When you have a site without content, in the customizer we show a bit of sample content so the site is not “empty” with the idea being that it’s hard to customize a totally empty site so it will help if what you see is representative of a page with content (text and images) on it.
This sample content shows only in the customizer, and only shows if you have an empty site with no homepage set.
I’ve a question for you here. Every page has an URL slug & it increments with every page created. It changes to the title if we define a title for the page. Can you explain how this works? Is it possible to reset this slug counter?
The slug you see there is only temporary (and assigned automatically) because you have not added a title to your page. As soon as you add a title we use those words to construct the “permalink” so that the page URL is made of words and not random numbers.
Some backstory here, I created another site (URL: sudovishal.wordpress.com) using this site. The second site doesn’t behave in such a way because it was built from start to finish using the structure and pages from this one. As you can see, it doesn’t show ‘Home’ on it’s homepage.
Correct, some themes have the option to deactivate the page title on homepages. So for your site sudovishal.wordpress.com which uses the “Blank Canvas” theme and by default this theme does not display page titles for your homepage, to keep the design as clean and minimal as possible.
If you were to switch thatvishalsingh.wordpress.com to the Blank Canvas theme, it also would have the “Home” title hidden: https://wordpress.com/theme/blank-canvas/thatvishalsingh.wordpress.com/
Also, the URL slug counter for the homepage of the second site is in single-digits whereas it’s in triple-digits for the homepage of the first one. The slug counter bugs me
As mentioned, the numerical slug is automatic, so not something we can control or reset. It’s also something that is not visible to the public normally, since as soon as you give the page a title we use the words to make up the permalink.
The only way to “reset” the numeric permalink is to start an entirely new site.
Hope this helps!

I’m already using the Blank Canvas theme, as you can see here:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1CLq50YIuIAp3jpTsDJGN5PIgfti_Cxlq/view?usp=sharing
Still, it shows the title ‘Home’ on it’s homepage.
I deleted the previous homepage & created a new one with the same blocks, but nothing changed.

Hi @singhvishal1190
I can see that the option to display the page title is turned on. That’s why it’s showing up. If you’d like to turn that off, please click My Site → Appearance → Customize → Content Options → Uncheck “Show post and page titles” → click Save Changes.
Doing so will hide the page title from your site.
