restoring WordPress website–partially backed up
-
Hello! My colleagues and I have developed a WordPress website over the last five years which was hosted at http://www.the-ogilvie.com. However, the website is currently down due to an error with the domain provider, IONOS. However, when we log into wordpress directly, we’ve noticed that it still records the number of posts and pages we’ve built over the years (13 pages and 107 posts specifically). However, we can’t make any edits to these pages–or export/import them, or even access the drafts–because all wp-admin links result in a DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_NXDOMAIN error. If we are able to restore the domain as provided by IONOS, will be once again be able to access these pages? Is there any way we could access these pages even if IONOS could not restore our access–for instance, by beginning a paid account with WordPress, either using the same or a different domain name? If possible we wish to restore these interconnected posts and pages manually rather than having to create and interconnect each one from scratch. If there’s any information you can provide, please let us know–we’re very eager to continue use of our WordPress website and would appreciate any help you can provide. Thanks very much.
Kind regards,
Calder

Hi Calder,
WordPress.com and WordPress.org are two completely independent entities. Your site hosted via Ionos is only connected to your account here via Jetpack, but none of your content is hosted with us.
That said, you will need to work with Ionos first to recover your site before you can migrate it to another host, like WordPress.com.
If you have more questions, it’s best to reach out to Ionos directly or ask folks at the community forums at https://wordpress.org/support/forums/.

Hi Fresatomica,
Thank you for your message. I really appreciate this advice; I’ve reached out to IONOS in the hopes of regaining access to the website. At the risk of sounding a little simplistic: if they are unable to restore our access to the website (as they’ve presently locked it), is it safe to say there would be no way to retrieve the posts/pages? I realize they are all still shown on the WordPress hub, but I just want to make sure there’s absolutely no way to recover them (given how much time and effort it will take to replace them manually) before proceeding should IONOS refuse to unlock the domain.
Essentially it seems like those pages still exist (as are still present on WordPress), which means they haven’t been deleted by IONOS, but I suppose I shouldn’t harbor any hope of regaining access to them. If IONOS can’t restore our control of the domain, would you recommend that my colleagues and I undertake a manual page-by-page restoration through WordPress directly?
If there’s any advice you can give, it’s much appreciated. In the meantime thank you for your previous response.

I think folks at https://wordpress.org/support/forums/ may advise better in this case.
We can only help with issues related to WordPress.com on these forums, and things do not work the same way here and on self-hosted WordPress sites, like yours. For one, any content you added to WordPress.com stays here, even if your subscription expires or you cancel it.
A piece of advice for the future, if you decide to keep hosting your site elsewhere, is to make sure you back it up. Jetpack can help with this:
https://jetpack.com/upgrade/backup/.
I hope you’ll manage to recover your site, good luck!
