  Hello I got an email saying if I create a domain name etc that it’s free the first year but it keeps wanting me to pay. I’m very confused

  Just read our offer again – https://wordpress.com/pricing/ – and you’ll see only the domain is free for the first year; but you still have to pay for the plan itself.
