Saving symbols in a [code] tag while in "visual" edit mode mangles the symbols

I am using the [code][/code] tags to display code snippets inside my posts and I have noticed that the editor will convert symbols like a greater-than sign that are inside the code tag into mangled HTML-ish if I save while in “visual” mode. Switching back to “text” mode and saving again seems to restore the symbols.
Any way to avoid this? A couple of times I have published posts with the mangled symbols in them.

Hi Josh,
Please insert all code in the Text Editor as it can create issues as seen when entered in the Visual Editor.
Does this happen sometimes even when you are in the Text Editor?
