security for my wordpress website

  Hi I currently have 2 wordpress websites and would like to make them more secure and also stop unwanted spam, I am okay with updating images, text and linking files but unfamiliar with security plugins etc and the correct ways to improve this area. I use my websites for updating my artwork and information on exhibitions etc. Thanks Irene
