  I’m trying to set up a free hosting account for a domain that I own. However, when I go through the process on the website, it adds a $96 charge to my cart. How can I sign up for the free plan that is advertised on the site?

  A free account is without a custom domain. If you want to use a custom domain on the wordpress.com platform, you must upgrade to a paid plan together with domain connection.
