I’m trying to start to set up my site, I have registered the name and my password has been accepted but every time I try to start all I get is ‘ You don’t have any WordPress sites yet ‘

It sounds like you registered a username account only. To sign up for your first WordPress.com site, simply fill out the signup form. http://wordpress.com/start
Did you receive an activation email?
Have you confirmed that your your email address is correct here https://wordpress.com/me/account?

Your account has been activated but you haven’t created a site yet. You can create a new site using this link:
https://wordpress.com/start/design-type
