Setting up Blog with a few grid tiles on homepage and separate pages for blog posts according to cat
-
Hello!
I am really struggling to set up my blog again to make it look pretty.
1: Ideally would like the home page to have a grid view with a featured photo for each post and the heading, and / or a few sentences.
2: Categories and pages that can be accessed from the homepage. I would love for the home page to have 3 – 5 tiles / girds for latest posts and then the categories of the blog as you scroll down (travel, food, community etc).
3: I have tried Edin, Fontfolia and Canard and can’t get it to grid nicely without showing all of my old blog posts one after the oter
4: Unfortunately, I have also failed to set up pages with matching categorised posts. Again, it would be great to have a line at the top with Home, About, Travel, Food etc so readers could click to see all the posts categorised with that title.I greatly appreciate any assistance that could be given on this. I am not particularly tech-minded so simple is best please ^.^
For reference the blog is: http://www.jessblaikie.wordpress.com it’s currently in a right mess
Thank you so much,
Jess

Hi @jessblaikie, would you like it to work like this?
https://canarddemo.wordpress.com/If so, you’ll need just a little bit of setup. Here’s what you need to do:
1) First pick five posts you want to feature. Edit each one, and give them all the same tag, such as “featured.”
2) Then set your front page to display the most recent posts. That’s under My Site > Customize > Static Front Page. Save that change, then…
3) Go to Featured Content (also under Customize). Type the tag you used in step one. Save your changes and you’ll be set.

Hi All
supernovia, thank you for your help! Those clear instructions were perfect, yes I do want it to work like this:
https://canarddemo.wordpress.com/Thanks to your advice I have the posts displaying on the front page like I wanted them.
I would now greatly appreciate some guidance please in getting the page headings across the top. The example link above has this for the categories “Architecture, Food, Cars etc” so that when you click on them it shows all the posts with that category?. Again, I’m struggling on how to do this.
Much appreciated!

@jessblaikie sure thing. Here’s how I would do it:
1) Publish some posts in each category you want to display at the top
2) Head to Customize > Menus > Add. Call it what you want.
3) Add items; you should be able to add your published categories there.
4) Put a checkbox in the menu location you want to use

Hi supernovia
Thank you again!
Not only did I get that to work as I had hoped, I have figured out myself how to add social media buttons at the top to link with my Facebook and Instagram… hooray! How can I tidy up the prompt to follow the blog via email at the bottom and remove the prompt re Facebook that is also currently there?
Much appreciated

Hi @jessblaikie, nice work!
You can edit the widgets through the customizer. It looks like the widget headings are super big because you made your heading font size large. But you could do a few things:
– Edit the widgets and remove their titles. You can do that via Customize — just click the edit icon by a widget to be directed to its edit panel.
OR
– Use a logo for your site header (It won’t be quite as big as what you’ve got there now, but it may work) so you can make your header font size a bit smaller.
OR
– Get WordPress.com Premium or Business, which gives you access to CSS and thus much finer control over the design of things. It also gives you live chat support and a bunch of other features.
I hope that helps!

Hi Supernovia
Thanks heaps!
I just made the font size smaller and have properly linked widgets for Facebook and Instagram at the bottom. It’s now set up the way I was hoping for.
Wish me luck to keep it looking so good when I start adding some new posts!
The support so far has been much appreciated.
Jess

@jessblaikie fantastic work! That theme adapts new post nicely, too. Just remember to swap out the featured stuff once in a while… or if you’d like, you can even change the featured tag to showcase different thems. So you could showcase Iceland stuff one day, for example, or spring, or whatever you’d like.
