Setting up Homepage Widgets in Academica Theme?

It looks like in the Academica Theme you can set your homepage to have a right, center and left widget area. I would like to set up a recent post widget in two of these areas for two different post categories. I have them set but they are not showing on my home page. How do I make that work?

The Standard layout has three columns.
