"Sharing" buttons not displaying
-
Hi,
I was really excited about using Jetpack to display the sharing buttons this plug-in offers.
However, these do not seem to work on my site — neither with my custom theme, nor with Twenty Eleven:
– when I click on the little arrow leading to the hidden sharing box, the browser is redirected to the top of the page;
– when I click on a button outside of this hidden box, the page opens again (for Print or Email), but nothing happens, except the page URL being appended with “&msg=fail” (no error message is displayed though)My site is http://www.meridian-online.com
Would you have any idea where the problem comes from?
Best,
Dorian

Would you please try temporarily deactivating all other plugins to see if that makes a difference?

Thanks for your reply.
Yes, I did try this, but to no avail.
Recently, I also tried using plug-ins allowing the use of “tabs” within pages etc., but none of those worked either. So I suspect the Javascript functionalities of my site are in cause, but I’m not sure how to fix them…?
-
That is entirely possible, but if it were the case it should have been fixed up by switching to Twenty Eleven.
Can you confirm that it still doesn’t work if you use Twenty Eleven with no other plugins active?
-
Alright, so under Twenty Eleven, the sharing buttons (including printing + e-mail sharing) do work fine if I disable a certain slideshow plug-in I installed.
However, when I switch back to my normal theme, regardless of the enabled/disabled plug-ins, the problems is still there.
So it would seem that both my theme AND this plug-in cause this particular JS error! How may I isolate it?
-
Ah, there’s the problem. Your theme appears to be a custom theme. I’d recommend getting in touch with the theme’s designer, as they probably know of a way to resolve the conflict with the slideshow plugin.
-
Hey,
Actually the problem with the Jetpack buttons does occur with my theme even when the slideshow plug-in is out of the picture (disabled or deleted). So it would seem the ‘root’ problem is still my theme itself, not the slideshow plug-in so much (I can do without, especially thanks to the Jetpack gallery features). The thing is, my theme developer is not at all reactive on those issues, which is a shame… I pretty much have to solve all those issues myself, despite my lack of knowledge in this field.
Would you have any ideas on how to arrange things? Someone told me the version of jQuery used by my theme might be a bit old, but I don’t know how to check this, and if it is the case, how to update it…?
-
That is possible. If so, just locate the jQuery library and replace it with the latest from http://jquery.com/
Also, jQuery is included with WordPress, so your theme’s developer really should set your theme to use that, which is what we use in Jetpack, as do most theme developers.
-
Well, just replaced the jQuery file by the latest version in my theme JS folder, but still no joy…
Is there anything else I could do besides that? Is the jQuery file generally referenced within other files, for instance? (I have no knowledge of Javascript whatsoever)
Man, I feel it’s really necessary I settle this problem once and for all, otherwise it’s going to impede the development of our website over and over again (I recently tried to install a couple JS-based tabs plugins which also failed to work, apparently for the same reasons…)
-
At this point, I’d recommend contacting the theme’s developer. Since it’s not a free theme, we aren’t able to get a copy ourselves to work with, but the developer should know the theme well enough to get a solution.
