Sharing images to social media – cropping the image

I am creating a website to showcase my art and allow visitors to view images at high resolution, download those images, or share them to social media. However, when I test sharing a portrait image to Facebook, the preview shows only the middle third of the image. It seems to post correctly more or less, but I want to correct this preview window (as I don’t want visitors to see this incorrect preview and decide not to post). I hope this makes sense! I am considering using a plugin to make this easier — I’ve been looking at Envira Gallery, but if anyone has other recommendations, please let me know.

  • Hi there,

That cropping is done by Facebook when they generate the preview on their end, so there’s no way to prevent that. Whether or not they crop the image depend on factors like the size and orientation of the image in your post, and what other content also exists in the same post.

If you don’t want that to happen, you’ll have to share your posts on Facebook manually, first adding the image itself as a new status update, and then adding the link to that.
