Sharing Staging

I’m making a website for a friend and was wondering if I could set up my site design and share a staging link before I purchase hosting and link my domain? Or if I have to link the domain and staging and then can start designing?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there,

Are you speaking of a site on WordPress.com, or a site using the open source WordPress software and hosted somewhere else?

If your site is on WordPress.com, we don’t sell hosting and we don’t offer a staging setup at all. A site like you have at http://harborpathdirect.wordpress.com/ is already hosted with us for free, and fully online – anyone can access it at that link, and search engines even index it at that link. When you buy an upgrade from us you’re not paying for hosting, but for enabling additional features on the site.

If you’re working with the open source version of WordPress, this would depend on your hosting provider. But in my experience, if the staging setup lives on your hosting provider’s server, as opposed to being a local WordPress installation on your computer, and there isn’s some setting or plugin that makes the site private, a staging URL is an actual domain controlled by the hosting provider, and should be accessible by logged-out visitors. If it weren’t accessible you’d never be able to check how logged-out visitors would actually see the site.
