Shopify site asking me to remove wildcard record from domain DNS settings.
-
I’ve had a shopify store for about 6 years now, with a domain provided by wordpress. I just got a notification saying “your domain has a wildcard record pointing to shopify. Open your domain provider’s DNS settings and remove the wildcard record.”
I’ve opened the DNS settings on wordpress, but don’t see anything about a wildcard record. How can I fix this issue?

Hi there!
I had a look at your DNS settings, and it seems they may be referring to the CNAME *.scotttuckfield.com. This is part of a standard DNS settings on WordPress.com site. Could you tell us a bit about how you’re going to use this domain going forward and if there was some more information provided on this from Shopify? Do you still want the domain to point to Shopify, or are you connecting it to a site hosted elsewhere?
-
I just use the domain as a clean web address for my store. I don’t have any plans to connect to any other sites. Here’s the full message from Shopify:
“During a routine check, we noticed a wildcard DNS record (looks like *.scotttuckfield.com). To follow best practices, please remove it from your scotttuckfield.com DNS settings and replace it with supported DNS records for any shops hosted under scotttuckfield.com that you may have. Your shop will continue to function normally with a wildcard DNS record, however this message will remain until your DNS has been corrected.”
I haven’t noticed any functionality problems from this issue before, and I’ve never changed this setting.
I followed the instructions in their “supported DNS records” link above, but it didn’t seem to turn off the alert, so now I’m not sure what they want me to do.
Thank you for your help!

Hey there,
The wildcard CNAME record in your domain ensures that if anyone incorrectly types your domain (like ww instead of www), they are properly redirected to the www version of the domain, which loads your correct site.
We understand Shopify recently started asking their site owners to remove this CNAME record. As they mentioned, your Shopify site will continue to function even with this wildcard DNS record in place; you may just continue to see the error message in your dashboard.
We’re currently working on a solution to remove the wildcard CNAME record, and I’ve noted your domain and account details to follow up with you when there is one.
I appreciate your patience in the meantime!
