Site says deleted but trying to create it for myself says site already exists.

I tried to create a new site and got the message “sorry that site already exists” but when I go to that site I get the message “site is no longer available. The authors have deleted this site”.
How can it be deleted but also already exist. I would like to know how to get that site.

The submission system automatically added the final line to my question. My question is NOT regarding anthonycrain.wordpress.com. It is a different site name of the format xyz.wordpress.com

Normally we would need the actual URL but in this case we don’t.
Sites that once existed in the WP.com system always exist in the ranks somehow. So a deleted site can still be taken. And URLs are never recycled here. Pick a different name.

Was this part of your reply a typo: “So a deleted site can still be taken.” That part seems to contradict the rest of your message.
There must be some way to release the site. If no one is using it, I’d like to get my hands on it.

A deleted site IS taken; by its former owner. It remains in that condition. There is no way to get it.

No, there isn’t. If you really want a name that badly what I normally suggest is registering closetorealname.wordpress.com and then buying the $18 a year custom domain and mapping upgrades to get whatyoureallywant.com instead. The domain upgrade is really the only one I recommend to everyone, and it’s very, very much worth it in the long run.
