Slideshow style image galleries

I’m trying to set up a photography site that has nice slide-show style galleries (examples: http://www.flash-gallery.org/demo.html). The key being that I want to be able to browse through “featured” images on the site without needing to load a separate page for each one. In other words, I’m probably looking for either flash or some javascript (I don’t think it can be done with just CSS, can it?).
I also need wordpress blogging capabilities.
Is that possible here on wordpress.com? Or would I need to go with a custom solution built from the software on wordpress.org?
In terms of hosting, wordpress.com appears to be very high quality for the price (free to start)… if I do need to go with a “custom built” site to get the style of gallery I want, are there any good alternatives for wordpress hosting that would still be as fast and robust as wordpress.com?

The two native features we have for photo display on WordPress.com are the Gallery:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/images/gallery/ which displays thumbnail images (or larger) in a Post or Page and which can link either to the original image or an attachment page, and an offshoot of the Gallery, Slideshow, which displays the same images as those in a Gallery, but in a flash based slideshow.Depending on how creative you are with coding your site (without plug-ins, javascript or flash), there are other things that can be done. If you want any other alternative to the above, then you are looking at a self-hosted site using the free WordPress.ORG software, but I could not say that any other webhost will be as fast and robust as WordPress.com. You can start your hunt at http://wordpress.org/
