  • Hello there,

Ok, this looks like a social media icon in use here.

Can you tell me what you would like to happen when clicked?

It looks like you might need to amend the link to: mailto:(email visible only to moderators and staff) (using your own email).

    Hi,

I am not sure what is exactly supposed to happen, but I would like for the person who clicked on the icon to be able to email me. I am okay with that happening in any way- it could maybe bring up a new blank email with my email address at the top so they have my email address, or it could even display my email address beneath the icon (?) – anything so they can reach me easily when they click this button.

I just tried your suggestion and it still does the same thing as before.

    Please help! Thanks

  • Hi perryjue, that is odd — I’ll see if we can figure out what’s causing that.

You can try adding mailto: in front of the address to see if that helps.

That said, have you considered pointing to a contact form, rather than giving your email address out directly like that? If you use a contact form on your site (and you can link to that) you’ll be protected from address harvesters, as well as most spammers.

Here’s how to add the contact form. You could just put it on a page called /contact if you want to, and link to that page.

    Hi and thanks,

So, adding mailto: didn’t work. I ended up making a contact form on another page. I love it! Works just as well.

Had to delete the email icon. Not sure why mine was broken :(

    Appreciate the help

  • Hi there,

I wanted to reflect back on your original question for a second:

My email button doesn’t work. I entered my gmail…When you click the email icon button it takes you to the gmail login page and not to a place or page where you can email specifically me

One thing to be aware of is that mailto links work if you are using app on your computer to manage your email. Think of Outlook or Apple Mail for example. If you click this kind of link it will usually launch the app on your computer, and open to a blank email for you to compose.

However if you are using “web mail” or an internet browser to access your inbox, these kinds of links generally do not function correctly. In your case there appears to be a permissions issue, and that is not something that we can get around, it’s a weakness inherent to using mailto links.

Because of this we recommend a contact form, which works for all site visitors and also has spam filtering built in. I’m glad you discovered that option!

    Thanks for rocking WordPress.com! :)
