'Sorry, there has been an error. This does not appear to be a WXR file, missing/invalid WXR ver

I backed up my site (www.johilder.com), then updated to a new version of WordPress (4.7), then attempted to upload/restore my backup via the importer, but it gives me this error message:
‘Sorry, there has been an error.
This does not appear to be a WXR file, missing/invalid WXR version number’
I have tried everything, and I mean everything, including switching hosts, to try and restore my website, to no avail.
I cannot even work out how to manually restore the backup via ftp, and the host providers are no help as they say it’s a WordPress issue.
    Please assist. Thanks.

    Stuff I’ve tried.
Plugins. Haven’t found one that’ll work.
Tutorials on adding txt to make wordpress read it as an wxr file.
    Zipping it.
    Etc etc etc.
