spacing when pasting from ms word

I paste an article in to wordpress and I end up with bizarre spacing and indentation on my paragraphs. Why is this?

Because MS Word introduces unnecessary code in the Editor. You should either use the “Paste from Word” button, or use something like MS Live Writer to post.

That is because Word is not a web application. It is a word processor designed for print media. It does not speak “web.”
WordPress automatically filters out all bizarre and bad Word code when you paste from Word, and sometimes that includes paragraph spacing and indention code. It just depends on how that was accomplished in Word in the first place.
If you use the “paste from Word” feature in the wordpress editor, that might save some of your formatting better than pasting directly from Word.
My suggestion, if you are on Windows, is to get the Windows Live Writer blog client, which is a free download. You can then paste from Word into WLW when you are ready to publish your post, and then publish the post directly from WLW. WLW will automatically fix all the Word formatting that typically will kill the web dead and leave you with clean, proper HTML in your posts, and few if any surprises when you publish it.
If you are on a Mac, Ecto is not free, but is a very good blog client. I’m just not certain how well it handles pasting from Word. I’ve never tried it.
