I have a reader who sees an ad at the bottom of a post I just wrote, http://funnyloveblog.com/2012/01/13/entertaining-this-weekend/, that I am unable to see. It is a picture of a video game character in between the post and comments/like section. When clicked, the reader’s browser blocks the site as malicious. Can you please tell me what this is, who is getting paid for it, and any other pertinent information? I was under the impression that wordpress.com wouldn’t put advertising on my blog without my knowledge.

To support the service (and keep free features free), we do sometimes run advertisements.
We try hard to make the ads discreet and effective and only run them in limited places. If you would like to completely eliminate ads from appearing on your blog, we offer the No-Ads Upgrade:

Can you tell me why we’ve never seen them before today? I completely understand that they are a part of the free service. Does this affect my opportunity to have outside ads on my blog at some point in the future?
Thanks for your fast reply!

We don’t always run ads, just when we need them to “pay the bills” and keep your blog free.
As for outside ads, we do have an advertising program called WordAds, which you can apply for at http://en.wordpress.com/apply-for-wordads/
Advertising outside of WordAds at WordPress.com is not allowed. For full details, please see:

http://wordpress.com/types-of-blogs/If you require other advertising, you might be interested in a self-hosted (WordPress.org) installation. There are no restrictions on advertising if you setup a self-hosted WordPress.org blog instead of a WordPress.com blog, but there are some added responsibilities.
Please see this link to learn about the differences:
