spamcop bouncing inbound emails
-
Hello,
I have an auto-forwarding custom email address, nick (at) deepnaturegardens (dot) com, which sends received emails to my personal address, nick (at) mindheart (dot) org. Recently people have been complaining that SpamCop is bouncing their emails to the first address. I tested it this morning and sure enough, SpamCop bounces incoming emails.
My custom address is not present in plaintext anywhere on my blog. Somehow a spammer got it on their list anyway, it seems. The diagnostic info is this:
Diagnostic-Code: SMTP; 554 5.7.1 Service unavailable; Client host [209.17.115.111] blocked using bl.spamcop.net; Blocked – see http://www.spamcop.net/bl.shtml?209.17.115.111
On the pages at SpamCop for this particular error, there is also this:
209.17.115.111 listed in bl.spamcop.net (127.0.0.2)
If there are no reports of ongoing objectionable email from this system it will be delisted automatically in approximately 13 hours.Causes of listing
System has sent mail to SpamCop spam traps in the past week (spam traps are secret, no reports or evidence are provided by SpamCop)
SpamCop users have reported system as a source of spam less than 10 times in the past week
It appears this listing is caused by misdirected bounces. We have a FAQ which covers this topic: Why auto-responses are bad (Misdirected bounces). Please read this FAQ and heed the advice contained in it.Express-delisting is not available
Listing History
In the past 88.7 days, it has been listed 21 times for a total of 15.8 days
Other hosts in this “neighborhood” with spam reports
209.17.115.40 209.17.115.45 209.17.115.52 209.17.115.53 209.17.115.109 209.17.115.110 209.17.115.112I’d really like to use my custom inbound address. How can I fix this, hopefully permanently?
Thanks…

Thanks for checking in!
I took a look at SpamCop’s documentation. It looks like SpamCop blocks emails based on the IP address they originated from. So, likely what’s happening is that the IP address these people are emailing from has been flagged for sending spam. This isn’t unusual since most ISPs serve their customers through a handful of IP addresses causing many users to use the same IP address.
We don’t filter email through SpamCop, so you’ll need to contact your mail host about disabling SpamCop.
Let me know if you have more questions!
