Specific Details Re: Security Features with WordPress.com Plan

I have already read the generic page that talks about the security in place with a WordPress.com plan. What I want is more specific information. I am debating whether to get a WordPress.com plan or purchase a shared hosting plan. My decision rests largely on what built-in security features are included with a WordPress.com account. If I use a shared hosting plan, I’ll need to purchase a security service that includes a web application firewall, performs malware scans, etc. I am trying to figure out if a WordPress.com plan will meet my needs. Not sure why WordPress.com doesn’t make it easy to talk to a sales or support rep to get a basic, yet important answer. So they direct me to the forums. Maybe that should be a sign about which direction I should go with service.

If you’ve read https://en.support.wordpress.com/security/ and still have specific questions you feel aren’t covered in that document then place them here and add the word modlook to the tag box on the right. In due course a member of staff will reply to you.

I have read and would like to better understand a product I’m paying for. The paid security services provide details about the firewall and scans they perform. Is that too much to ask from Automatic?

    Hi pmckinney07,

What are the specific security concerns you have about creating a site on WordPress.com?

Not sure why WordPress.com doesn’t make it easy to talk to a sales or support rep to get a basic, yet important answer. So they direct me to the forums.

These forums are where we provide support for sites using the Free plan — live chat and email support is a feature of paid plans. Without that, you can use the modlook tag @themagicrobot mentioned to bring your question to staff attention here:

    Contact WordPress.com Support

There’s no need to add the tag again, we will see your reply :)

That’s my point. I don’t want to get a paid plan until I can speak to a human. But it seems like I have to buy a plan before I can talk to a human about the questions I have about purchasing a paid plan.

SiteLock, Security, WP Fence all have more details about their products. My question is basically: does a WordPress.com account include the security features that those companies do or not? Not having to purchase a security plugin might make the loss of customization an okay compromise for a WordPress.com paid plan.

But the lack of ability to talk to support staff may negate that. You would think they would make talking to a staff person easy as it might drive sales.

I am a member of the support staff at WordPress.com, so it is possible to speak to us on these forums even though live chat and email aren’t available. Let me see what information I can find and come back to you.

I’ve spoken to our developers about the security elements you mentioned here. All the information we can provide is listed in our Security documentation:

Keep Your Site Safe and Secure

If you need more control or require bespoke security measures, you may want to consider using WordPress.org software:

    WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org
