SQL dump from self-hosted WP to XML?

Hi, I am trying to import a zipped SQL backup of a self-hosted WP blog to my WordPress.com account. I found an xml converter that converted the sql file to xml, but when trying to import it to my WP.com blog, it keeps saying it’s an invalid wrx file. Do you recommend any SQL-to-XML converter? Or any tool at WordPress.com admin that can help me solve this problem? Thanks a lot!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi @blogdosespiritos, is the old site still live? If so, the easiest method would be to just create the XML using the export tool.

If it isn’t, we’d have trouble importing the images anyway.

Let us know if that’s the situation you’re in and we’ll try to come up with some ideas.

Hi @supernovia, actually the website is down. So I’m afraid we’re facing the 2nd scenario.

I had problems connecting the WP installation with the database and simply cannot access the Admin anymore. But one week before that I’ve backed up the files and the database and wanted to move to WordPress.com Personal plan, so that I don’t have to act as a sysadmin anymore and can focus on the blog’s content!

But if I understood what you said, even if you manage to help me with the database import, I still would have problem with the images, right?

Is there any chance you can help me?? =0

    Thank you in advance!

  • Hi @blogdosespiritos, if at all possible, have the host restore a backup so the site is live again just long enough for you to export / import.

If they don’t have a backup, you could restore to a new installation at the same domain. This is of course more complicated.

Once this is done, though, you won’t have to play sysadmin anymore. Will that work?
