I have my website on SquareSpace and want to move it to WordPress. I have a domain name I’d like to transfer as well. Can I do this with a free WordPress membership? Any assistance making this transfer would be very much appreciated. Thanks, Karen

Please read this document for help of how to import your site to wordpress.com https://wordpress.com/support/import/import-from-squarespace/
You will need to have a paid plan if you want to use your domain on wordpress.com https://wordpress.com/pricing/

Thanks very much! Will the $4/mo plan be good enough?
I’ll check out the documentation you sent and come back with questions. Thanks! -
Any paid plan will work
If you can afford it yearly plans are cheaper that monthly plans

I was able to export the site from Squarespace and then import it into WordPress, but it sure doesn’t look like the original site. I’m wondering if it would be easier to start from scratch? And I bought the $4 plan, will I have wordpress stuck in my url?
Thanks very much for your continued guidance!

Any paid plan removes .wordpress.com from your domain
I will ask for a Staff member to read this to get their suggestions about your site not looking like the one you imported
Staff are employees. I am a volunteer.

Ok, thanks. Didn’t realize you are a volunteer. I’ll reach out to support for further help. Thanks again.

Hi! Did the text and media of your Squarespace site import, even if the layout did not?
In general Squarespace and WordPress are quite different softwares as it is; however the method described in https://wordpress.com/support/import/import-from-squarespace/ specifically uses an XML import. XML files contain the basic data (meaning: page/post text, addresses of images that need to be imported) but they don’t have elements of the site design that would be specific to Squarespace.
If you’re finding that there’s missing content please do let us know and we can take a look!

So, basically, I now have all the parts, but need to do the design over again from scratch?

Hi there,
Because Squarespace is a completely different system from the one we use here we only have the ability to move over the content (pages, blog posts, images, etc.) but not the theme or design itself. https://karengardnerphotos.com/ is your current Squarespace site, yes?
By default sites on WordPress.com show their blog posts as the “homepage” but it appears on your site there you had a custom homepage set up. You can do that by following the steps here: https://wordpress.com/support/pages/front-page/
Also since our editing tools are a bit new to you, you may want to watch this recording of a recent webinar we offered on how to create a custom homepage in WordPress: https://youtu.be/fQRkzwVPIVI
Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.

Thanks very much. Yes, that’s my site on SquareSpace. I’ll take a look at the links you sent tomorrow and will get back to you with the questions I’ll no doubt have.
