SSL and domain name
-
Hello,
We require a subdomain website to be built in order to host a WordPress plugin. We intend to purchase the ‘Business’ package directly through WordPress. If we manage the domain and certificate ourselves, are you (WordPress) able to produce a certificate signing request as part of this package? Thanks in advance.

Thanks for your prompt reply & appreciate that WordPress can handle it for us. However, we have a central IT unit who manages the domains and SSL certificates for our entire organisation, and we require that they continue to do this from a business risk perspective.

Hi there,
Thanks for clarifying. Currently we use Let’s Encrypt for all our domain SSL certs, and do not have the option to use a 3rd party certificate manager.
In this case I would not recommend our service as we cannot meet this specific need. You may instead wish to work with a traditional host as they may offer more flexibility in this regard. If you are looking for a good web host for your self-hosted site, we recommend the following providers, who all offer easy-to-use wizards to help you get your first WordPress site set up and running:
That said, most major web hosting providers will work, so you can just ask if the one you are interested in supports WordPress.
Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.

Thanks for that – I’ll just check once more with the IT unit to confirm if the Let’s Encrypt partnership is at all viable. Just one more question then, are we able to register our own sub-domain name (we are a Higher Ed institution)?
Thanks again.

Yes it is possible to use a subdomain as the address of your WordPress.com site. You will need our “domain mapping” upgrade which is included in all the plans listed here: https://wordpress.com/pricing/
Once you upgrade, we can walk you through creating your subdomain and assigning (mapping) it to be the custom address of your WordPress.com site.
More info here: https://wordpress.com/support/domains/map-subdomain/#connecting-a-subdomain-to-your-word-press-com-site
Hope this helps!

It does help – thankyou!! Last question – the IT unit have confirmed that the ‘Let’s Encrypt HTTP-01 challenge’ may be used – is that the standard SSL that comes with the WordPress package and if not, is it possible to use that specifically? Many thanks!

Hi there!
That is exactly what we use here :).
Please note, however, that you won’t have any control over the SSL if you decide to move over to WordPress.com. Our implementation comes as is.
I hope that helps. -
Thanks for all your help, appreciate it. We have now purchased the business package and our IT team are ready to create the subdomain – they have asked for an IP address to put in the DNS entry? Can you please advise what that is or how I can find it?
Thanks again!
