Staging and production connections

  • Unknown's avatar

Hello – I wanted to test VideoPress on my staging site, so I disabled the ‘jetpack_is_staging_site’ filter.

However my staging site and production site were using the same Jetpack connection, so I disconnected both, then reconnected both. But unfortunately now all the Site stats are connected to my staging site, and my production site appears brand new.

Additionally, the 1 video I uploaded as a Videopress test appears in the Media library of my production site and not my staging site. But it is my staging site that says I’ve already used my 1 video, and my production site says I still have 1 video.

Seems some wires are crossed. How can I uncross them?

  • Hey there! That does sound like some crossed wires. You’ve reached the forums for our free-tier hosting somehow, too. Jetpack is just a bit out of my wheelhouse, but can you try checking the site URLs for both sites (under Settings > General in wp-admin), then try reconnecting Jetpack on both sites?

I can also say if something happens and you lose your stats and whatnot, support can help sort that out. If you want to reach out directly to them, you can click here for support with any paid Jetpack plans, or you can reach out in the Jetpack forum at WordPress.org.

Hi @supernovia thanks for the feedback.

Yep I double checked the URLs – definitely the 2 different sites. I did try disconnecting both sites and reconnecting, but the problem persists exactly as described.

In the meantime I’ve completely disconnected, deactivated, and deleted Jetpack from both sites as described here https://jetpack.com/support/reconnecting-reinstalling-jetpack/. I’m now only reactivating it on my production site. I’ve lost my stats, but I can live with that.

With the above steps, I was now able to upload a video again via Videopress to test it. Whats strange is that now I’m seeing 5 videos in my Videopress library – several of which seem like duplicates of the original tests, and the 1 new video I uploaded which is the only video that also shows in the Media Library as a Videopress video.

Just a really strange and confusing experience. I don’t know which videos to even try and delete at this point.

I tried just deleting all the other videos that were appearing for some reason, and that seemed to work. I’m down to just the 1 new video I had tried uploading, and that seems to be working correctly.

So at least its working again without mixed data between staging and production. The one remaining side effect has been losing my stats.

  • HI @kflogdev I’m glad that things are working again. I wanted to also underscore that we use a custom implementation of Jetpack on WordPress.com that is different from how the plugin operates.

With this in mind we’re not able to help with Jetpack issues, but as @supernovia indicated above, you can reach Jetpack support directly here and they will be better able to assist you: https://wordpress.org/support/plugin/jetpack

    Thanks!
