Staging site “stuck”

I am working on a new site. I created a staging environment using the native in built wordpress option. I was practicing in staging environment to try a new theme (SocialPress). Everything was going well. Making changes in staging, then repeating the change in production if all goes well.

However, at a particular step, after deleting a staging environment, when I went to create another one, one was AUTOMATICALLY being created even though I just deleted it.

Its been 2 days now and its still stuck in this state. Now that I really want to make a staging site, I cannot.

I troubleshoot in many ways and it still there. I even reset my website to new and its still there. Then I reverted it back- still there. I dont know how or where to find this “stuck” staging site to delete it so I can move on with my life.

Someone- please delete this stuck staging site.

Also please explain why this happen? Did a theme I tried automatically create a staging site without me doing it?

I have a commerce plan and used the 24/7 chat I have access to. No live human interaction and I kept waiting…

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

When a staging site gets stuck in a creation loop, it’s usually because the database entry for the staging environment didn’t clear properly during the deletion process. This causes the ‘Managed WordPress’ system to try and reconcile the state by restarting the creation task every time you refresh the page. Since the user has a Business/Commerce plan, they have access to SFTP and Database management. While a Happiness Engineer is needed to ‘kill’ the process at the server level, the user can sometimes break the loop by going into their Hosting Configuration > Settings and toggling the ‘Staging Site’ feature off and on manually to force a status refresh. A theme like ‘SocialPress’ wouldn’t trigger this automatically; it’s almost certainly a synchronization error between the site dashboard and the physical hosting server.

So are you telling me to clear this myself? I just look again and it still says “adding staging site”. its been 3 days now. Please explain this in steps. I dont understand how to refresh this manually.

I dont feel I got the explanation I am asking for. I guess I will have to keep googling this. I dont know what SFTP and database management. Where to find host configurations?

This did not really help me. I still need to google how to do these things. smh.

I am not able to do this—>Hosting Configuration > Settings and toggling the ‘Staging Site’ feature off and on manually to force a status refresh.

Where is the toggle switch? This is a WordPress error.

    Hi there @insuranceagent617!

    Thank you for sharing!

The process takes a bit to complete; however, I tried it on my end and noticed that the staging site was successfully created.

If you still need help in the process, please let us know via email or live chat and we’ll be happy to guide you further.

OK so it seems to have finally made the staging site. I was able to see the option to delete it in the staging settings. I will remake one and continue working and hope this doesn’t happen again. Any explanation as to how to go about correcting this if it occurs again would be greatly apprectiated. Thanks.

Have you checked whether the staging environment is still being managed by your hosting provider’s dashboard or any plugin (like Jetpack or a staging tool), rather than WordPress itself, and could that be what keeps recreating it automatically?

    Hi @insuranceagent617

I’m glad to see the staging site came through, and you’re back up and running.

    To answer your questions:

Why did this happen? Occasionally, when a staging site is deleted and a new one is created right after, the process can get stuck during setup. It’s a synchronization hiccup and not something caused by the SocialPress theme or anything you did.

How long should staging site creation take? It can take anywhere from a few minutes to about an hour depending on how much content your production site has. If it’s still showing “adding staging site” after an hour, that’s a sign something is stuck.

What should you do if it happens again? This is the kind of issue that needs to be resolved on our side – there isn’t a setting or toggle you can use to clear it yourself. If you ever see staging site creation stuck for more than an hour, the best step is to reach out to us through support, and we’ll get it sorted out for you.

Here’s a handy reference for managing staging sites going forward: Create a Staging Site

Let us know if anything else comes up.

    Cheers!

    Hi @insuranceagent617,

I checked your account and can confirm the staging site was fully deleted. If it’s still showing that “Adding staging site” screen for you, could you try clearing your browser cache and then check again?

We have a guide that will help with that here: https://wordpress.com/support/browser-issues/#clear-your-browser-cache
