I want to start a new website using Hero Theme. The problem is that I just get my old blog into the new theme…How can I start from zero a new website?
    Thanks a lot
    Francesco

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Log into WordPress.com and click on the “my blogs” link at the top of the page (direct URL is http://wordpress.com/my-blogs/ ). Then look for the “create another blog” button on the left hand side.

Let me know if you have any trouble.

    Dear Rootjosh,

    thank you it works.
Last question: if I want to creat a website instead of a blog, can I follow your indications or they are only to create a new blog?
    thanks a lot
    F

  • While the button itself says “blog” the difference between a blog and a website on WordPress.com is really in how you set the site up. So ignore the wording on the button and use the same method to create a new non-blog site.

    Dear Rootjosh,

thank you for your quick explanation.
Now that, thank you to your help, I have created a new non-blog site, I need a quick tutorial to get started. For example how to create the home page…I saw on the web there are different tutorial but I would prefer to get your recomandation.
    Thank you very much

The tutorials on the web are almost all for WordPress.ORG installs, not for WordPress.COM blogs.

A blog is a website. This is all semantics and blog structure. A blog is a post based website designed for interactive communication. As the posts are frequently updated and appear on the front page of the site it’s very attractive to search engines.

What most people call a website is merely a page based site that functions as a one way noticeboard. As the structure is page based and as pages are for static content that rarely changes, and as pages do not have RSS feeds it is not as attractive to search engines as a post based blog structured site is. When it also has a static front page that compels visitors to click through a static front page every time they visit the site then the blogger has made a traffic killing choice.

By default the front page of your blog displays all published posts (not pages) in reverse chronological order, with the most recently published post on top. That is for the convenience of your returning visitors, who come to read your latest post, and who are not likely to be happy with being compelled to click through the same static page with the same blah, blah, blah on it every time they visit the blog looking for the latest post.

However, if you do not want all the posts to show on the front page, and know that static front pages are traffic killers, then you can create a static front page called for example “Welcome” for your site and a “Blog” page for posts. To do that create two pages first http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/

After you do that you go to > Settings > Reading and make the designation change and click “save changes”.

Any WordPress blog can be restructured from being post based to being page based – no upgrade required. For greater clarity read >

The only themes we can use on free hosted WordPress.com blogs are found here http://wordpress.com/themes/ There is no FTP access to free hosted WordPress.com blogs for security reasons and we cannot:

    upload any third party themes,
    create child themes,
    create our own themes,
    edit templates,
    create own own layouts,
or use stylesheets from other themes.

There is no upgrade you can purchase that changes that.

    Dear timethief,

    thank you for your help.
I want to create a simple website for free and then to buy a better solution but only after being confortable with wordpress.

My experience in building website is very limited and so far I have only worked with Wix.com :-( I know and I am sorry.
I want now to work with WP but i find it less intuitive.
I have choosen http://herodemo.wordpress.com/ since I need simple web site in 3 languages (Italian, English and Chinese), 1 big picture and 3 tabs:

who I am: CV and a brief history
what I do: list of treatments
where I do it: address of the clinics and contact details

My first problem is that i can not re-create the Hero Theme. I can not upload the pictures in the same position as the theme.
    What am I doing wrong?

Thank you so much for your help and have a good day.
    Ciao
    Francesco

  • Timethief has given you a lot of very good information. The only other thing I would add would be this resource:

    http://learn.wordpress.com/

It is a great place to start if you are new to using WordPress.com.
