Starting a website

  I would like to start a new website for a nonprofit that I am part of. We own a domain. Can I start building a website with WordPress before linking an official domain to it? I need to create an example that I can show to other members for approval, before I can go ahead and link our domain to it. I was able to do this with Wix but I want to see how WordPress compares before I choose Wix.
