Starting Site

Hi there, I’m getting hired to design a site for a business using wordpress.
I’m just not understanding how this works. They have a domain name already, there was an option to transfer, but I need to only transfer when the site is complete.
How does it work with that regards? If I transfer the domain name to here, do I need to use a web host through wordpress? or can I remain with the current one they use?

  • You can build the site here, and when you’re done, you can either:

    1. Keep the domain registered where it is an just map the domain to the site: https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/

    2. Transfer the domain to us: https://en.support.wordpress.com/move-domain/incoming-domain-transfer/

I’m confused. Is wordpress not free?
I’m filling out the info to start a site and keep the domain, then it ends up at a payment plan. Am I doing something wrong?

  • Hi there,

Making a website costs money, no matter how you do it. To make a website you’ll need a domain, a server, and bandwidth for the server to be connected to the internet, all of which cost money.

On WordPress.com, we provide the hosting (server and bandwidth) for free, but we charge for the service we provide when we let you connect a domain here that you already own somewhere else.

Your other option is to use the open source WordPress software found on WordPress.org. That software is free, but you will have costs to host it, whether you host it on your own, private server, or with a hosting provider like Bluehost.
